Individual Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a form of talk therapy that provides an opportunity to explore thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and internal/external experiences. The role of therapy is to provide a safe and supportive environment where the client can gain insight, make sense of their experiences, and gain the courage to make changes in their life. While the therapist acts as a guide to help the client understand their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, the client is responsible for playing an active role in reflecting on their inner world and exploring themselves.

Before beginning psychotherapy, it's important to understand the aims and goals of the therapy process, as well as the expectations of both the therapist and the client. It's also helpful to research different therapeutic approaches (schools of therapy) and identify a therapist with the skills and experience to meet your needs. Preparing for psychotherapy involves setting aside time each week to attend sessions and being open to exploration, learning, and growth.

The most important factor for effective therapy is the relationship between the client and the therapist. The strength of the bond established with the therapist, and the trust it is based on, ensures the effectiveness of therapy. This sometimes means that, in addition to the therapist's approach, their personality or attitude should also be compatible with you. Furthermore, the therapist's sincere effort to understand your cultural background and life experiences, their attentive listening, their sincerity, and their willingness to express your discomfort also strengthen this bond. Therefore, do not disregard therapeutic compatibility, your feelings, and your intuition during therapy.

During the session, notice which emotions particularly come to the forefront. When dealing with difficult emotions and beliefs such as shame and guilt, how you share these with your therapist and the feedback you receive provides valuable insights into the therapeutic relationship.
